Information for Authors

Thank you for your interest in submitting to the Externalizing Asylum. Please be sure to carefully read these instructions and follow them as closely as possible, so that your submission matches the initiative’s aims and scope, and to make the peer review process and production as smooth as possible.

Preparation of submissions

  • Language
    • Contributions are welcome in Dutch, English, German, Greek, or French.
    • Please aim for accessible language that can be understood by readers from different disciplinary backgrounds.
    • Where the use of technical or legal terminology is necessary, it is helpful to add a brief explanation.
  • Names and Abbreviations
    • When first introducing a term, institution, or document, please provide a short name in brackets (e.g. European Court of Human Rights (Court)).
    • Use this short name consistently throughout the text.
    • In general, a short name is preferred to an acronym.
  • Spelling
    • Both British and American spelling are acceptable, provided the choice is applied consistently.
  • Citations
    • Any established citation style (such as OSCOLA, APA, or others) may be used, as long as it is applied consistently.
    • Place references in footnotes (without bibliography)
    • We kindly ask authors to avoid hyperlinks in the text.
  • General Writing
    • Clear and accessible writing is highly valued.
    • Please keep in mind that the readership includes scholars from different disciplines, so efforts to explain or avoid specialist jargon are much appreciated.
  • Length
    •  Manuscripts should be no longer than 5-6 pages (approx. 3000 words) long
  • Other Instructions
    • Include a short abstract.
    • Tables and figures are welcome, but should be self-contained and comprehensible without reference to the text. To aid the reviewing process, they should appear within the main body of the manuscript as closely as possible to their first mention in the text.
